Jingle Bells

Learn the solo version (so that you don’t have to sing it during this holiday season, let everyone else belt it out!). Level of difficulty is more towards the Intermediate, but it would make a challenging, but fun piece to learn for the beginning guitarists. There’s an accompanying music score in notation and Tab with the video lesson (24 minutes).

Greensleeves

Greensleeves is a traditional tune that can be traced back to the 1500’s. It’s a popular piece for beginning guitarists because its melody and harmony are pretty straight forward. This arrangement, however, utilises a few jazzy chords to give it a more contemporary twist. Level of difficulty is in the Elementary to Intermediate range (there are barre chords). There’s an accompanying score in notation and Tab with this video lesson (22 minutes).

Classical Gas

This is one of the all-time favourites, originally composed and played on the classical guitar by Mason Williams. This piece is arranged for the intermediate level, with interesting changes in time signatures (4/4, 2/4 and 6/8). There’s an accompanying arrangement in notation and Tab with this video lesson (24 minutes).

Estate (Summer)

Originally an Italian song by Bruno Martino, made famous by the Brazilian singer/guitarist João Gilberto. It’s arranged as a bossa at an intermediate level, with barre chords occurring at a few places. This could be a challenging piece but the beauty of the song should inspire you to learn it! This is a beautiful song by the Beatles. The arrangement is not difficult, thus suitable for a beginner to intermediate-level guitarist. There’s a cool phrase using harmonics. A music score (notation and Tab) is included with this lesson (33 minutes).

One of Richard Marx’ hit ballads and still a favourite among students. The lesson (46 minutes) includes a song sheet with Tab, with instruction on how to add bass and harmony to the melody. The level of difficulty is introductory / intermediate.

White Christmas

This is a famous Brazilian song by Jorge Ben, popularized by Sergio Mendes. The level of difficulty is intermediate to advanced. The challenge is to keep the rhythm going, while playing the melody on top. The lesson (39 minutes) comes with the full arrangement in notation & Tab.

Unchained Melody

The song was written by Alex North and Hy Zaret, made famous by the Righteous Brothers in the 60’s.

The level of difficulty is intermediate to advanced. There are full-barre chords and a few extensions. However, there are ways around some of the challenging sections by using different chord voicing, for example.

The lesson comes with a song sheet & Tab. This is a good song for me to demonstrate the art of solo guitar playing and arranging.

A standard among classical guitarists, Sounds of Bells was written by the Brazilian Joao Pernambuco (1883-1947). It’s not a terribly difficult piece to play and with the help of the music score, an intermediate guitarist can learn it.
